- When did you start as a DJ? Believe it or not, I started in 1980 at a college radio station. I ran into a friend from childhood in the halls and he invited me into the station. I saw the mixing boards, turntables and microphones and was hooked on the spot. By the end of the semester, I was Music Director and then soon after Program Director.
- How did you become a Mobile DJ? The college was doing a fundraiser and we used a portable PA system performing in the student center. I got so fired up from having the actual audience in front of me; I went out and bought my own equipment. I put up flyers all around the area and started getting gigs regularly and paid for college through my DJ business. This continued after college and I became one of the three âoriginalâ mobile DJ in New Jersey back then. We competed because this was a new thing to hire party DJ and wedding DJ. We were like a novelty back then. Hard to imagine that today not having a DJ would be a novelty.
- Why do you offer a guarantee? I know I excel as a DJ and MC. I want you to have that same confidence so you can focus your attention and energy into other areas of your wedding or event. You worry about getting your guests there and feeding them. I will take care of making sure they have a great time and remember your wedding or party long after. They will have fun and I know that, so I can offer a guarantee since I am certain you will want to pay me. You are investing in me by hiring me and sending me a deposit. I invest in your wedding or event by offering a guarantee that states if you are not happy with my performance, you do not have to pay the remainder of the balance. Period.
- What was the largest crowd you ever performed for? It was a Thanksgiving night at a club I was Resident DJ and we had nearly 2700 people jammed in there. It was so much fun!
- Share one of your favorite experiences as a DJ. It was last May. I was hired to DJ and MC a wedding for a local New Jersey couple. He was from Georgia and she from France. A week before the wedding all the airports were closed in France due to bomb threats and her family was not going to be able to come to her wedding. She was freaked-out and called me crying at 6:20a.m. to tell me. I tried to support her but knew there was little that I could do. The day before the wedding she called me at 6:45a.m. to tell me the ban was lifted and they were coming after all! They actually landed in Newark and came directly to the wedding, changing in the bathroom of the reception hall where they were married on a gorgeous night outside. She was radiant with joy about her wedding and family magically being present. The wadding was so full of love and warmth that everybody was dancing, smiling and singing with celebration the whole night.
- What kinds of venues and events have you performed at? I think everything that a DJ can do really. To make a quick list: radio, clubs,bars and all the events one could possibly imagine from Weddings, Sweet Sixteens, Graduations, Birthday Parties, Communions, Family Gatherings, Class Reunions, Fashion Shows, Anniversaries, Corporate Events, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs and good old-fashioned neighborhood pig roasts. I even was DJ and MC for a twenty-four hour dance marathon for Muscular Dystrophy once.
DJ Mystical Michael has over 30 years of DJ experience, and spent 7 years as a full-time DJ. He started with two Technics turntables playing rock, what we now call Classic Rock. He expanded his repertoire to include Dance and New Wave/Punk, and then became a local favorite for his knowledge and collection of Oldies from the 50âs and 60âs, although not yet born or too young to actually have experienced the music himself. Today, his collection has evolved to over 125GB and 72 days of music covering the period from 1946 to this month with emphasis on Pop, Dance, Rock, Reggae, Oldies, Reggaeton, Hip Hop, Rap, Latin, The Classics and Classical, Lounge, Buddha Bar, Café and Popular Country. In his unstructured time he can be found dancing, creative writing, singing, near food , playing volleyball, meditating, painting/drawing/calligraphy and enjoying beaches, mountains and forests. He just returned to The States after a year and a half in Asia.
